The Lackawanna Historical Society has so much to offer if you want to learn the history of Lackawanna County. The history it has to offer ranges from city directories, geneaology files, photographs, many different books and annviersary booklets. The staff is so helpful and will try to help you in any way they can.

The Lackawanna Historical Society headquartered at the Catlin House (1912) is now over 125 years old and still going strong under the dedicated direction of Mary Ann Moran-Savakinus, executive director. The Society offers the area a reference library full of genealogical information and numerous files of all types to assist the amateur or professional historian. The Society puts on numerous events during the calendar year designed to acquaint the area with local history and other events of historical significance. The late Alan Sweeney was instrumental in establishing the annual Civil War Ball in Scranton and in commemorating the Titanic disaster with both dinners (2002, 2003, 2004) and a luncheon (2012) of seven-course meals served on the doomed oceanliner. The Society also offers lectures on a variety of topics of historical interest and maintains a bookstore of local historical works by local historians. The work the Society does and the partnering it engages in in the area with sites like Anthracite Museum, Steamtown National Historic Site, Trolley Museum, Scranton Iron Works, Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority, etc. is the envy of non-profits in the area. It is an understatement to say that the LHS is not only indispensable to the area in preserving, protecting, and collecting local history but also is one of the best receptacles of local artifacts graciously donated by members and likewise graciously accepted by the Society for its ever-growing collection. The LHS is an invaluable resource for the area.
